A Warning About Google Translate...or any online translator
Students will have homework that involves writing in French. Students should not use Google's online translator or any other online translator. While it may seem convenient, here are some of the main reasons not to use machine translation:
- Your child's command of the English langugage is much higher than their command of French. Thus, when translating from English to French, the machine translation will produce a text that students at the elementary level wouldn't naturally produce.
- The goal of immersion is to have students use the French they know to write and speak. Students must be discouraged from thinking in English and then translating into French--with machine translation or not.
- Machine translations are far from perfect. The resulting text could be nothing like the text that was intended. Students at the elementary level will not be able to detect the mistranslation.
